There are various methods to treat head and neck cancer efficiently. IMOR Institute utilizes the best technology to treat cancer cells located in these areas of the body.
In many cases, these tumors are detected by a dentist or an oral surgeon, who recommend their patients to consult, in turn, an oncology specialist like us. It may be due to a lump located somewhere in the neck (usually near lymph glands) or a poorly healed wound in the mouth.
Head and neck cancer: its peculiarities
They tend to be tumors with specific behaviors. However, we must always address to its origin, where it arises (primary site). For example, regarding the neck cancer, the cases in which it starts on vocal cords show a very different course than those that originate in the back or outside of the tongue.
This category includes a very common type of tumor called “squamous cell carcinoma”. It usually appears in the cells that act by coating the inside of the mouth, nose or throat. What factors can lead to its occurrence? The two most common causes are smoking and HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). Therefore, education and prevention are very important (in both cases).
Radiation therapy for neck and head
IMOR Institute has several treatments that can be applied in the cases of head and neck tumors. The ability to identify each case perfectly from the diagnosis using the latest technology allows us to act more quickly and more efficiently. After explaining the recommended treatment and other possible alternatives to the patient, medical team and patient will decide about the treatment to be carried out.
There are mainly three types of treatments for neck and head cancer: surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Combinations of these alternative treatments are often used to treat head and neck cancer. Both the state or severity, and the site of the tumor(s) will be key to decide the treatment to be used.
However, we prefer to start with treatments that do not worsen the current health or the daily routine of the patient too much. In IMOR Institute, we use minimally invasive radiotherapies (the external beam is applied only on the sensitive area to be treated) that produce fewer side effects than other treatments. Furthermore, we can hence use more efficient doses. During the treatment, the patient will not feel as much discomfort as in other cases and the progress can be assessed starting from a few weeks later.
