Treatment for lung and respiratory tract cancers

Home  /  locations  /  Treatment for lung and respiratory tract cancers

Were you looking for a treatment for lung cancer? IMOR Institute presents some of its treatments in these lines with special emphasis on radiotherapy for lung cancer. We are a Catalan oncology institute that is committed to minimally invasive treatments that do not affect (as far as possible) healthy tissues and organs, as well as those that may have minimal side effects.

In this respect, we have the devices that have provided us the newest technologies in the market in our domain of activity and although there are possible side effects, these are much smaller than those known to date. In addition, the doses are applied almost without any pain and in a short time.

Causes, symptoms and prevention of the lung cancer

As IMOR Institute, we want to invite everybody to quit smoking. It should be noted that almost 9 out of 10 cases of lung cancer occur in smokers and can also affect other tumors. Smoking is the main cause of lung carcinoma in passive smokers as well. Other causes may be genetic or, in some situations, environmental. It has also been proven that other pulmonary diseases may eventually develop a lung tumor, but these form a small part of all cases.

Some of the symptoms or signs that allow us to detect a possible risk of lung cancer are:

cáncer de pulmón y vías respiratorias

  • Persistent cough or drastic changes in the usual cough.
  • Chest pain, especially when inspiring.
  • Dyspnea (sensation of shortness of breath).
  • Hemoptysis (expulsion of blood with cough).
  • Wheezing (mild whistling or hissing in the chest).
  • Dysphonia (notable changes in the voice).

Difference between small cell and non-small cell lung cancers

When we talk about lung cancer, it is important to know the difference between small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer.

Small cell lung cancer, called as microcytic lung cancer. Cases of small cell lung cancer account for 1/10 (or more) of malignant lung tumors.

Non-small cell lung cancer (or non-microcytic lung cancer). They can be adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and large cell carcinoma, and the total of all these types represents higher than 80% of all lung cancer cases existing today.

Treatment for lung cancer without metastasis

For lung tumors at primary or less advanced stages, only the surgery may be required. It is likely to also require some chemotherapy sessions depending on certain factors. However, radiotherapy is advisable for the cases of cancer at an advanced stage but without metastasis. IMOR Institute offers different treatment modalities that can be applied on a case-by-case basis (condition, size, number of tumors in the lung or chest…).

  • Radiotherapy for the thorax. Intensity-modulated radiotherapy.
  • Radiotherapy for lung cancer. SBRT.
  • 4D radiotherapy.

Treatment for lung cancer with metastasis

In the advanced stage, it can be very difficult to cure if the pulmonary tumors have spread to distant sites. What treatment options do we offer? It depends on several factors, such as the site where the tumor has spread, the general health condition of the patients, the number of tumors and their size, etc.

Radiotherapy, targeted therapy combined with chemotherapy and immunotherapy sessions can help to extend the survival and have greater well-being. Although the likelihood of being cured is minimal or almost inexistent, it is worthwhile to carry out these treatments for lung cancer as palliative care and to avoid the risk of a rapid spread (greater control). It is also possible that specialists deem the use of other therapies, such as photodynamic therapy, as appropriate.
