Treatments for rectal cancer

Home  /  locations  /  Treatments for rectal cancer

In IMOR Institute, we have a team of medical professionals trained to diagnose and treat the cases of colorectal cancer. We will address these treatments here but firstly, we will determine the different types of colorectal cancer or tumors that begin in colon or rectum.

Types of colorectal cancer

Adenocarcinomas are the most commonly seen colorectal cancers, affecting more than 90% of the patients who have had this type of cancer. Other types of tumors that appear in these organs much less commonly include:

  • Carcinoid tumors.
  • The gastrointestinal stromal tumors.
  • The lymphomas.
  • The sarcomas.

Diagnosis: Determination of the stage of rectal, colon or colorectal cancer

In IMOR Institute, we have the latest technology to treat and to diagnose these cancers related to the colon and rectum. What colon or rectal cancer treatment can we apply? It depends on many circumstances, but we must first determine the stage or grade to which the disease has progressed through the diagnosis. To do this, we will determine the factors such as the extent of the tumor, existing mucosa, underlying fibrous tissue (submucosa), presence of thick muscular layer, and examine the thin and more external layer… We should also investigate whether it has spread to lymph nodes or distant sites such as lungs or liver (in this case, metastasis).

This will be decisive when opting for the treatment to be applied. For example, in the advanced stage of rectal cancer, cancer cells have spread to organs and tissues that are far from the area where cancer started. In this case, therapies can be palliative and aim to control the size of the tumor so that it does not affect or block important organs, to relieve symptoms and pain, and, in general, to improve the health and well-being of the patient for the longest time possible.

Radiation therapy of the colorectal cancer

At IMOR Institute, we have the latest devices and the best technology for the diagnosis and radiotherapy treatment of colorectal cancer. We can give the radiotherapy as IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy) that allows us to modulate the intensity of the beam to be applied in the given area. Depending on the stage and other factors, we can also implement chemotherapy, colostomy (surgery) or other complementary treatments.
