Treatment for bone and soft tissue cancer

Home  /  locations  /  Treatment for bone and soft tissue cancer

The IMOR Foundation offers bone cancer treatments described below. Firstly, we would like to present some of the most common cases and types of cancer in the bones and then in the soft tissues.

Malignant bone tumors: cases

Although there are benign and non-cancerous bone tumors, we will focus on those containing cancer cells. There are different types of bone tumors, which should not be confused with some tumors that originate from the soft tissues (many of them or their origin are confused). Therefore, we will first discuss some of the most common types of cancer that originate in bones and that contain cancer cells. And, then, we will talk about the treatments for these types of cancer.

Osteosarcoma

It is the most commonly seen type and originates from bone cells. It affects people of all ages but it most often appears in young people. Osteosarcoma most commonly develops in the hip (pelvis), arms and legs. In IMOR Institute, we offer treatment for osteosarcoma.

Ewing sarcoma

It is the second most common bone cancer with chondrosarcoma after osteosarcoma. It gets its name from the doctor who detected and described it at the beginning of the 20th century. It usually develops in children, adolescents and, in general, young people, and although it mainly affects the long bones of the arms or legs, it can also appear in other areas such as the hip or pelvis, scapulae, ribs,… A study carried out in American population revealed that it affected white people more than other races.

Chondrosarcoma

The second most common bone cancer with more risk factors in older people (affects men and women equally). It originates from the cartilage.

Cordoma

It usually occurs at the skull base and spine. It is a bone cancer that is very commonly seen in people over 30 years, especially in men. These are slowly growing tumors that may not spread to other areas (usually to lymph nodes or lungs).

Treatments

  • Surgery.
  • Chemotherapy.
  • Radiotherapy: 3D radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).
  • Bone metastases: IMRT or Fractionated Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SBRT).

At the end of the relevant clinical studies, we will opt for the treatment to be given depending on the diagnosis. If you think you may have symptoms that indicate the presence of a bone or soft tissue tumor, consult with our professionals.
