SBRT is similar to radiosurgery but it is applied to small tumors at any anatomic location outside the head. SBRT allows the application of necessary and accurate doses in tumor lesions outside the skull through the irradiation with high precision. And, it should be noted that, some of these lesions require the best technology, the state-of-the-art in extracranial radiosurgery, as well as the assistance of the guided radiotherapy. In this sense, the linear accelerator is an essential technical resource for us.
What is it used for?
To treat head and neck cancer, brain lesions or tumors located outside the skull, as well as metastases, pancreatic tumors, etc. Sometimes, due to respiratory movement, we need breathing control techniques that we will also apply to the treatment when required. It is the case of many of the conditions that affect the lung, pancreas or liver.
How many doses and sessions?
This technique requires a good immobilization system as well as the control of this immobilization to be able to deliver high doses in very few sessions. The doses given usually range between 5 and 20 Gy per session and are administered for 1 to 7 sessions. This is the maximum allowed number of sessions since the dose applied by X-rays in each fraction is quite high. It is usually combined with the IMRT or VMAT technique.
